Skilled Migration Internship Program - Accounting (SMIPA)

The Skilled Migration Internship Program-Accounting (SMIPA) is a structured one year professional program sanctioned by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) in an effort to retain skilled workers in Australia.

The Professional Year Program was developed as a joint initiative by the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) and CPA Australia (CPAA) and is administered by registered providers who are jointly approved by the three professional bodies.

SMIPA is available to international students who graduate with an Australian accounting degree after at least two full years of study and who hold a 485 Graduate Visa or whose visa application is in processing with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). Successful completion of the SMIPA always awards additional points under the general skilled migration points program.

Program Structure

  • Minimum 44 weeks training, comprising of a 12-week internship placement with a related host company.
  • Professional development and practical hands-on learning, with an emphasis on workplace preparation: Culture,     ethics and expectations.
  • Recognition as a pathway for 485 graduate visa holders seeking permanent residency under general skilled     migration (GSM).


  • Graduate of an accounting program that is comparable to an Australian Bachelor’s degree with at least two full     years of study in Australia.
  • Hold or have applied for a 485 Graduate visa (this visa allows you to live and work temporarily in Australia after     your studies).
  • A Migration Skills assessment from an accountingprofessional association.
